What makes Scottsdale a sustainable place?

Rachel Sacco, President & CEO Experience Scottsdale

“One of my favourite experiences in Scottsdale — something I hope all our visitors enjoy — is watching the sun rise over the McDowell Mountains as it paints the sky in cotton candy colors. Beneath that sky and at the foot of those mountains are thousands of acres of protected desert land.

Scottsdale is home to one of the largest urban preserves in the United States, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Thanks to forward-thinking leaders in the 1990s, one-third of Scottsdale’s land mass is forever protected, the flora and fauna along with it. Hundreds of miles of trails within the Preserve are maintained so that visitors and locals alike can experience the wonders of the Sonoran Desert, from towering saguaros to seasonal wildflower blooms.

This longstanding commitment to protecting our unique and delicate ecosystem has taken root all throughout Scottsdale, including in our hospitality businesses. For Scottsdale’s tourism industry, “going green” is an economically and socially responsible way to help our destination and community thrive.

Here, visitors will explore LEED-certified museums and solar-powered attractions. They’ll wander our walkable, bike-friendly downtown, where the city is making strides to provide more shade and mitigate heat. They’ll play the nation’s most progressive and innovative golf courses in terms of water conservation. They’ll stay at hotels and resorts that support local nonprofits serving our most vulnerable communities. And they’ll dine at restaurants whose chefs incorporate locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and produce.

Just as we are committed to preserving our natural environment, so too are we dedicated to celebrating and sharing Scottsdale’s culture and history. Visitors will discover the area’s rich Western and Native American heritage through live performances, thrilling adventures, seasonal events, and outstanding art and museum exhibitions.

I so often hear that visitors leave Scottsdale refreshed and revitalized — and feeling better than when they first arrived. I invite visitors to experience all the ways local businesses embrace both tried-and-true and innovative new practices to lower their impact on the environment. Because I truly believe that visitors leave Scottsdale better than when they first arrived as well.”

– Rachel Sacco, Experience Scottsdale, President & CEO

Quick Facts

When to Visit Sustainably

Scottsdale enjoys more than 330 sunny days each year, which means pool season runs year-round, hiking trails and golf courses are always open, and any time is a great time to visit.
During winter, while much of the US is shovelling snow, Scottsdale enjoys sunshine and an average of 22 degrees.
Spring is the season to visit if you’re a keen outdoorsperson, warmer days and blooming fauna make the perfect combination for wildflower hikes and mountain bike rides.
Scottsdale in summer can be fry-an-egg-on-the-pavement hot, but there are plenty of ways you can stay cool while enjoying the best of the area, from spa breaks and (mercifully) air-conditioned museums to rafting on the Salt River.
Scottsdale’s local spend autumn basking in the cooler temperatures following summer, with an International Film Festival, farmer’s markets, and outdoor adventures filling the days.

Suggested Season

Peak season tends to run from January to March, with March being the busiest month, and recently October is showing to be equally as popular. We would recommend visiting in May, before temperatures get too high, and winter, when the days are still sunny and warm.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright's Talisin West

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West is Scottsdale’s only National Historic Landmark. It serves as a prime example of Wright’s organic architecture in that the structures are built of the rocks and sand of the Sonoran Desert and melds to the lower McDowell Mountains.
The grounds and buildings were constructed over a period of approximately twenty years by Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentices. Set amid a Sonoran Desert Preserve of 491 acres, Taliesin West tours wind through provocative terraces, landscaped gardens and walkways commanding dramatic views of Camelback Mountain and the Valley of the Sun. They also have an incredible onsite solar power field.

  • Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West

  • Golf in Scottsdale (Boulders, Grayhawk, Legends, Trrails, TPC, Troon North)

In the 1990s, the city of Scottsdale partnered with several golf courses on a highly effective solution to water conservation: the Reclaimed Water Distribution System (RWDS). This system allows Scottsdale Water to supply reclaimed, treated wastewater for irrigation to 23 public and private golf courses in the northern part of the city. This complex system of pipelines, booster pump stations and reclaimed and advanced water treatment facilities is capable of delivering 20 million gallons a day of non-potable water for turf irrigation. Over the years, participating golf courses have invested more than $55 million into the system so that no taxpayer or rate-payer fees would be used. These courses are proactively executing better sustainable water practices to further extend a more restrictive supply. When courses use less water in the winter months, the excess is further purified —beyond drinking water standards — and injected into the aquifer to further advance Scottsdale’s long-term water sustainability.

In partnership with the Thunderbirds, tournament vendors and the PGA TOUR, WM leads operational efforts to divert 100% of waste from the landfill through recycling, composting, donation and energy conversion. • Desert Botanical Garden

One of the most popular attractions at the Desert Botanical Garden, the Butterfly Pavilion houses thousands of colourful live butterflies. The pavilion is part of the Garden’s Pollinator Conservation Research Program, which centres on the special relationship between pollinating insects and desert plants that are important for their survival.
